Field Report from San Francisco

Date: Feb 21, 1997
Retailer: The Goodguys (1400 Van Ness Avenue. 415-775-9323)
Item: Panasonic DVD-A300

I was just over to the Goodguys to see a DVD demo. It was a Panasonic model DVD-A300. The list price for the item is $799.99. The sales person ("Ukay") told me that they also had a cheaper model (DVD-A100?) for $599.99 but it wasn't on the show floor. They are currently taking orders. He has personally sold 5 already. The customers can pickup their orders after March 15th. They will give you a coupon for 2 DVD movies. He also says Blockbuster will begin to carry DVD movies at about the same time.

Unfortunately I couldn't peek into the box--it was tucked inside a home entertainment center. But from what I can see the picture is abolutely gorgeous. Especially the still shots, you just can't believe the detail you can see. I have a Pioneer laser disk player with a Sony XBR monitor at home and the picture still does not compare with the DVD (on a Panasonic big screen).

Of the 4 video segments on the demo disk I watched Twisters and GoldenEye. The moving segments were very good. I could not detect any artifact or blocking when the tornado blew across the truck. The only slight blocking was on Helen Hunt's cheek during a pause in still frame. But you have to come right up to the screen (6") to really see it.

DVD is definitely here.

p.s. Could some of you living in other parts of the company start visiting your local retailers to report back on the status of DVD rollout? Thanks.
