Phoenix--Mar 30--The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) should oversee the central bank gold lending market, said Terry Smeeton, non- executive director of Standard Bank London Ltd. Smeeton was head of the foreign exchange division, Bank of England, until his retirement in April 1998. "I would propose that this role should fall to the BIS and it would be an appropriate issue for the new Financial Stability Forum proposed at last months G7 meeting," he said, speaking at the Gold and Silver Institute annual meeting here. Phoenix, Ariz.-Mar 30-The London Bullion Market Association has reservations over both confidentiality and delivery issues for the London Metal Exchanges new silver contract, said Chris Elston, the LBMAs chief executive. "We will have difficulty living with the potential breach of customer confidentiality that would be involved in any requirement to report (over-the-counter) contracts or positions to the LME," he said at a Gold and Silver Institute annual meeting here today. Phoenix, Ariz.-Mar 30-Demand for gold and silver in India this year is expected to be relatively good, said Chris Elston, chief executive of the London Bullion Market Association. Speaking at the Gold and Silver Institute conference here, he said that the outlook for agriculture is positive this year. "As long as the rupee doesnt collapse and there is no reason to suggest it will, there will be disposable income available for gold and silver," he said.
