Nolan: MSFT does not have to compete with SUNW but they want to. Basically their management scheme is based upon the Dark Ages Sloan (from GM fame) Monopolistic Management style. Gates attests to this desire. Under this antique approach MSFT is in competition with everyone. Newer management approaches teach quality and partnerships not manic competition and alienation at all costs. In other words, he would like to destroy Unix, he would like to destroy Java, and replace them with standards based on MSFT's marketing and financial whims. MSFT is a poor corporate citizen in the modern business world.
