CNN and Inktomi Team Up for Faster Online Content Distribution
ATLANTA and SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 31, 1999-- CNN, the world's news leader, and Inktomi Corp. (Nasdaq:INKT), developer of scalable Internet infrastructure software, today announced a strategic technology relationship to enhance the CNN Web sites' infrastructure for online content distribution. Inktomi's Traffic Server(TM) network cache platform will be deployed to accelerate content delivery while simultaneously improving the efficiency of the CNN Web sites' network in the second quarter of this year. "As the world's largest provider of news content over the Internet, the CNN Web sites required the proven scalability and robustness provided by Traffic Server," said Monty Mullig, vice president of CNN Internet Technologies. "Inktomi's flexible caching platform provides the high performance needed to handle efficiently the CNN Web sites' large and growing Internet traffic, which in March averaged 23 million page views each weekday."
"Internet-based content and commerce providers like CNN know that blazing performance has become a competitive necessity," said Paul Gauthier, chief technology officer of Inktomi. "Inktomi is building the infrastructure software enabling the major content providers to intelligently optimize content distribution and interoperate with Internet backbone and ISP networks."
The CNN Web sites generate more traffic and attract more unduplicated Internet users than any other company's general news and Web sites. The CNN Web sites, which averaged 138 million page impressions per week during February 1999, consist of: CNN.com; CNNfn.com, a unit of CNN Financial News; CNNSI.com, a joint sports site with Sports Illustrated; AllPolitics.com, a U.S. political news site produced in conjunction with TIME magazine and Congressional Quarterly; CNN CustomNews, CNNenEspanol.com; and CNNemPortugues.com.
Inktomi's Traffic Server is a carrier-class network cache designed to help Internet infrastructure and content providers scale up their operations to meet rapidly growing demand and performance requirements. By embedding programmable intelligence into the network, Traffic Server provides a platform for ISPs, backbone companies, and hosting providers to deliver value-added services to their customers. Support for caching and distributed hosting of advanced multimedia protocols is the first component of this strategy. Traffic Server also supports the world's first streaming media caching, advanced features for web hosting, and rich support for popular Internet protocols.
