Paul,
<<Canada is sinking about as fast as a country can, despite what the UN says. Funny thing, they are now investigating some of the figures that have been fed to them over the years. >>
Not surprising ... reminds of the economic data coming out of the US these days<G> .... and likely Canada too.
Is the absolute measure of the value of a place to live, the status of the companies that are doing well here? No doubt it is _very important - but not the only measure. Things like crime rates and access to medical care are important too.
Also - my comment has to be taken within the context of the globe .... certainly Canada is one of the best place to live. <<We are followers to the upmost and nothing better than a training ground, to pick from, for those with determination abroad.>>
Witin the context of our size\poopulation, we have contributed much to this globe .... perhaps you need to reread history ..... eg., I bet you think that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb ..... wrong! ... it was invented in Toronto and tested successfully by a medical student at U of T years ahead of Edison .... Edison bought the patent off of him .... one small example of how history has been rearranged .... and certainly not the only one. I recall a few years ago listening to a senator down in the US deriding our health care system .... yet the very cancer treatment that saved his butt, was developed here in Canada .... talk about irony. These are just small (ans some would say petty) examples - but to compare us to the US is not appropriate ... they are 10x's bigger .... they wield much more economic clout than we do. ... you would certainly expect, just from a statistical basis, to see more come from there.
<<You are young, I can tell>>
Depends what you mean by young .... but I have been voting for almost 30 years .... but I have to agree ... our politicians, generally speaking, have not done as good a job as I would have liked. And our welfare and UIC system have been to generous ... no doubt about that. And frankly, both my father and father-in-law would agree .... what they fought for - and what has evolved, was not their vision.
As much as I fear politicians and how they work, I fear a corporately led world too, I suspect the private sector solutions may not be that palatable either. There has to be a balance.
<<. We are due for a licking once the US economy slows down and slow it will, as the amount of so called valued paper out there is mind bggling.>>
You are likely very right ... lets hope that gold can save our butts.
Best to you,
MB
