Windows is popular *only* because people have no choice. Yes, Microsoft *is* a monopoly on the desktop computer market. Like all monopolies, they are milking it for everything they can. For example, the price of a pc has dropped to as low as $300 yet microsoft still gets their $100 for the os. Pretty unreasonable considering Microsoft was also getting $100 when the computer was $3000!!!! And of course, as the computers get cheaper and sell more volume, microsoft keeps plugging away.

Perhaps the most intuitive reason WinCe sucks is because it is part of the Microsoft "lock-in" your customers strategy. Although I can't be absolutely certain, I would venture that most of the bulk in WinCE is there to tie their desktop/server systems to WinCE (ie nt, windows 2000). WinCE is kinda like Congress; their primary job is make sure that you reelect them every year. After that is taken care of, maybe they will do their job (but probably not.)

In short, WinCE is *not* and operating system, it is *not* an embedded system. Rather, it is a big hairball cluge designed to integrate with the rest of microsoft's software.
