Warner-Lambert's Rezulin Might Help Cure Cancer, Study Says [same news as that in the Reuters article at reply # 661]

Morris Plains, New Jersey, March 30 (Bloomberg) -- Warner- Lambert Co.'s diabetes drug Rezulin could help cure a rare cancer called liposarcoma and also protect patients with prostate, breast, colon and lung cancers, United Press International said, citing a study by researchers at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Rezulin binds onto a receptor that controls the growth of cancer cells, letting them die normally instead of dividing uncontrollably, the study said. Harvard Medical School Professor George Demetri said the drug could treat more than 500,000 people diagnosed with cancer annually, and the study said more than 90 percent of liposarcoma cells revert to normal in the presence of the drug, UPI reported.
Rezulin has benefits that outweigh its risks when used in combination with other diabetes drugs, a panel of diabetes experts advising the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said last week.
