Those other distinctions dissapear over time unless a strong effort is made to prevent it. Take race for instance. Without laws or lynching to prevent it there is signifigant interbreeding of the populations until few can claim a pure heritage. All the other traits tend to change and blend over time. That doesn't mean that everyone comes out the same, it's just that the differences wax and wane and do not remain constant witht the same groups over time. Religion is the one trait that changes infrequently, and when it does change is usually accompanied by deep divisions and isolation of the members.
