Sony, JVC to tie up on new digital video system
TOKYO, March 30 (Reuters) - Sony Corp <6758.T> and Victor Co of Japan (JVC) <6792.T> said on Tuesday they would jointly develop a new digital video system with networking functions.

The companies said in a statement their cooperation would bring together JVC's know-how in basic D-VHS video technology and Sony's expertise in the IEEE 1394 networking standard.

The new video system will be able to receive satellite or terrestrial digital broadcasts and transfer digital video images via a connection to a set-top box, the statement said. The companies gave no details about when the product would go on sale.

The IEEE 1394 standard was set in 1995 by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Sony and JVC were arch-rivals over the format for videocassettes in the 1970s and 80s.
