From the RB thread to Charlie

This message is in response to Charlie on the SI board. I don't have a
membership to SI, so I am hoping someone can relay this to him.

The question Charlie had was in relation to underground storage tanks in the oil
industry. I spoke with Myles today regarding water mains, and he said that the
device is effective in determining leaks at depths of no more than 7 feet. Unless
those are shallow tanks, I don't think that storage tanks qualify.

The reason it is not effective is because the dirt causes a dissemination of the
sound when it gets down to far below the surface.

I hope someone can relay this to Charlie.
