<<We won World War One, but that was not the end of the matter, and we squandered it, and Hitler came to power. Clinton is squandering the legacy of Reagan and Bush in foreign policy, and we will continue to suffer for it unless we elect someone credible in 2000...>>
I'm beginning to have some doubts that we even won in that sense. If the German Empire had an economic collapse in the midst of 1917, and a few members of the government got shuffled around, but the same people remained in power and the military had not changed its stance or objectives, would we have considered it a victory? Would it have been a victory just to have the Germans withdraw from the front and Alsace Lorraine? Would it have been considered foolish in such a case for the Allies to disarm? Given the Cold War was a much different animal, the analogy only goes so far. But do you see what Im pondering? Im throwing this out because I was hoping to get some response from others, consider it my own private thought exercise ;)
You are right though, in any case. Clinton has squandered the legacy of 12 years of Republican foreign policy vigilance. I dont think I saw exactly how far and to what extent that legacy has eroded until we began to bomb Serbia. Its rather embarrassing. By the way, who's your wishlist pick for 2000, just for conversations sake? Bush Jr. has done a good job here in Texas, although Im not sure if he's tested enough for the Big Chair. Given the choices though, Im voting Bush in 2000 if he gets the nom. Wish we had a Goldwater... |
