Sun role could impact accounting of AOL deal - WSJ
sonny, u want to explain this to me in english? (tia)

NEW YORK, March 31 (Reuters) - The degree of Sun Microsystems
Inc's involvement in the recent America Online Inc
stock deal with Netscape Communications Corp .
could affect the way AOL is allowed to account for the
transaction, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.
If regulators conclude that Sun effectively bought
Netscape's corporate-software business, AOL could be required to
account for the deal differently, the newspaper said.
It could incur as much as $9.7 billion in "goodwill" charges
against earnings over a number of years, the newspaper
reported.
As a result, AOL would take between $96 million and $243
million in annual earnings charges, using a conservative 40-year
write-off period.
Officials at AOL told the newspaper they are confident the
company has met the accounting requirements.
AOL closed up 12-13/16 at 144-3/4 Tuesday on the New York
Stock Exchange and Sun closed up 1-7/16 at 125-15/16 on Nasdaq.
