So, what does this leave as "proprietary"? The gfx chipset (which doubles as memory controller, saving you a fair amount of dollars, and more in comparison to what other manufacturers have to do to get rid of the bottleneck between gfx and main memory in other ways). You got that one right.
As far as upgrading, the next generations of PC graphics will likely need AGP 4x, and by that time you will probably want 133MHz frontside bus CPUs to feed the gfx pipeline, so tell me, what current "generic" motherboard is AGP 4x and has a 133MHz frontside bus?
are Dell etc. really better placed to leverage everything that's coming our way? After all, *they* have to wait until their suppliers develop the things, and then find a way to integrate the pieces -- they're not exactly pushing cut-throat technology in the NT space.
