Hitachi to aim for return on equity ratio of 8 pct

AIM HIGH, HITACHI ... EVEN WITH INFLATED BOOK VALUE ... 8% IS A PRETTY PALTRY EFFORT ... --Duker

TOKYO, April 1 (Reuters) - Hitachi Ltd aims for a return-on-equity ratio of eight percent within four years, President Etsuhiko Shoyama told a news conference on Thursday.

The company plans to assemble a four-year management programme within six months in order to achieve that target, Shoyama said.

Under that programme, Hitachi will channel its resources into the key systems integration, software and network sectors, Shoyama said.

The company will also push for a drastic realignment, sale or closure of individual operations if needed after they are assessed on the basis of specific profitability criteria, he said.

Shoyama said he expects all of the company's 10 business divisions, including the semiconductor business, to post profits in the 1999/2000 business year that began on Thursday.

Hitachi expects to post a consolidated net loss of 375 billion yen for the 1998/99 business year that ended on Wednesday, with the operating loss in the troubled chip division expected to swell to 110 billion yen.

Hitachi plans to cut its work force from 67,000 at the end of March this year to 60,500 by next March on a parent company basis.
