The key to build a Reliable network like current telephone network is
redundancy. The redundancy built in a network element(Node).

The STRM products, for example, BPX, MGS, IPX, IGX, and AXIS, are all
designed with redundant circuits with automatic switching mechanism
according to Bellcore spec. Those products have been deployed by AT&T
Interspan Network since early 90s. In second half 1995 to early 1996,
both Lucent and IBM have evaluated BPX product with high marks. I
suspect if CSCO were not bought STRM in first half of 1996, either
LU or IBM would OEM the product.

CSCO routers are crashing all the time since a lots of built in the
early time were without redundancy and were software rich product. The
Carrier featured 12000 series is addressing reliability issues. It is
a step into right direction, but it is just a start. It'll take some
time to mature.

LU and its Bell labs as well as NT are the master of reliable
telephone networks with over 100 years experience. I am still waiting
to see their reliable router products yet. Without router, the
internet would not work.

Cheers!
Mike
