How can you say this constitutes anti-UConn or pro-Duke bias? The statements on the pregame had nothing to do with whether there are or aren't good ballplayers coming out of Connecticut or North Carolina. The commentators were praising both coaches for making their programs truly national in scope by expanding their recruiting beyond the borders of their home states. Whether UConn had 2 players out of Connecticut or none really isn't germane to the discussion. What is germane is the fact that both coaches recognized long ago that to compete nationally you have to recruit nationally. Which is all the CBS guys were trying to say.

I am really bothered by the trend these days that people think they have to trash the opponent in order to get their point across. Both teams Monday night played great games. Any other team in the tournament would have lost to Connecticut by at least 15 points the way they played Monday night. In my mind, both teams proved they were great teams. I thought Calhoun was a very gracious winner, though his players went a bit overboard with the "shocking the world" business. The Duke players and coaches were justifiably upset that they lost the game, but they gave UConn the credit they deserved for beating them. But it seems to me that UConn backers, in order to somehow legitimize in their minds the fact that they felt their team did not get sufficient respect during the season from the media (though their ranking during the season and #1 seeding would suggest otherwise), have to go around bad mouthing Duke when Duke represents what is good about college basketball. Duke graduates its players, has maintained a high level of competitiveness over an extended period of time, and does everything with a great deal of class and integrity. As far as I know, UConn does the same. So let's revel in what will eventually go down as a classic championship game match-up of two great teams that was not decided until the last seconds of play and look forward to more great things next year from both teams.
