Yes, node selection is random. Yes, some nodes will definitely see more traffic than others. However, keep in mind that at the speeds the data will be traveling, routing through the "middle of Lake Michigan" won't make a bit of difference as there will be no statistical difference in arrival times compared to using a more direct route. In fact, a location like that in the middle of the country may actually attract more traffic than one at the "end" of the data path, much like the interstate gets more traffic than an off-ramp. We used the World Trade Center analogy to purposefully exaggerate the situation just to "play it safe".
