Actually, this is a good thing as everyone already suspected that January numbers were going to look awful. (I wouldn't be surprised if February was pretty bad as well.) The upside is decreased uncertainty going forward as 1Q99 will appear more like a normal quarter. Including January in the quarter would have perpetuated the muddy waters for another three months rather than just the next month. Plus we get to actually see the damage as 3dfx must report January as a special supplemental period to its statements.

IMHO there are four reasons that for the recent move up:

1) Decreased uncertainty going forward

2) Voodoo3 will launch (be in stores) less than a week from today

3) Rumors have spread that the reference board that Nvidia used to hype TNT2's capabilities is too expensive for boardmakers to produce and sell at a competitive price

4) Small cap tech stocks have done amazingly well across the board this week as large cap stocks leadership have waffled.
