I have always had mixed feelings with regards to Del. I believe that the Enterprise decisions that he made have been reasonably sound (even the VSGN acquisition). Who can argue with an enterprise technology direction built on Server-side Java and CORBA?

As I see it, his real mistake was the classic mistake of forgetting the core competency of Borland. Borland was making a decent living selling excellent development tools at the low and mid-levels, and has an strong base of loyal users. None of the strategic visions painted by Del talked about the desktop developers. Nor did he consider huge market opportunities in alternative OS's (i.e. Linux). These would have been no-brainers to anybody who had a solid grasp of Borland's core competency. The end result was to alienate and confuse Borland's developer base (i.e. ignoring them in the quest to be enterprise king). If the Java and CORBA growth predictions would have been .25 of 1997 expectations, then perhaps Del would have been successful. Unfortunatelym they have not. Del has committed two textbook business blunders: He neglected Borland's core competency (and customer base), and 2) he bet all of his money on one horse.
