Internet Protocol (IP) version 4 is the common bearer service used for today's internet. The Next Generation (NGI) will deploy IP version 6 (IPv6) and all implementations must be backward compatible with IPv4. This will allow the NGI to coexist with the existing internet while preserving one of its greatest strengths: the ability for any node to communicate with any other node in a compatible transport format. Furthermore, the NGI will enable applications to specify a network "quality of service" (QoS) along dimensions including transmission speed, bounded delay and delay variance, throughput, and schedule.
