Microsoft is aiming to become a big player in music on the Net

April 1 — Microsoft Corp. is running into static with the record industry as it tries to muscle into the exploding Internet music arena with a new digital-delivery system. To showcase its new compression software, code-named MS-Audio, Microsoft would like to persuade Alanis Morissette and other top rock stars to turn over two previously unreleased songs or videos for Microsoft to post on Web sites.
