<<Why is it that every time the US is involved in some sort of conflict, someone always brings out the old chestnut that "US doesn't have the guts". What the hell's that supposed to mean anyway?>>
I have to agree Nuke, and its not because I want to. An absolutely unnerving unwillingness to absorb losses has permeated the US policy making apparatus. US policy is aimed at hitting targets from a distance and keeping losses to a minimum. If we start taking losses, or if there is a threat that increasing the risk means taking losses, the question of backing out inevitably comes up. I also think the public is willing to do what is necessary if they can be convinced its not pointless, *but* attention span is short and politicians are fully aware of it. This spinelessness has crept up on us, IMO, within the past 8 years. Americans have always been shy of conflicts unless obviously justified, but this level of cowardice on the part of the administration is bizaare and frankly I cant explain it. I believe its just a facet of this Administrations addiction to polls and public opinion as gauges of policy. Its absolutely monstrous. It doesnt have anything to do with the military, you know as well as I, more so, that the US Armed Forces go where they are told, and they go with gusto. Its lack of "political" guts. This Administration is unwilling and unable to look Americans in the eye and say, "we did what we thought was right, I stand by it, you can voice your opinion at election time, right now Im doing my damn job." Thats a very Republican thing to do... |
