Compaq, Microsoft will put spotlight on Alpha By Carmen Nobel
Continuing leverage its acquisition of Digital Equipment Corp., Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ) next week will unveil new hardware and software for the Alpha platform.
On the software side, the Houston-based company will introduce the latest version of Tru64Unix, formerly Digital Unix, as well as the latest version of its clustering software, TruCluster V5, which will give single-system image support to Unix clusters, according to sources close to Compaq.
New hardware will include the WebBrick Alpha Server DS10, with one 466MHz processor, and the Alpha Server ES/40, with as many as four 500MHz processors, sources said.
Alpha is also going to get some attention next week from Microsoft Corp. According to sources, the Redmond, Wash., company will demonstrate a 64-bit version of Windows on Alpha at the WinHEC show in Los Angeles.
Industry experts say Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT) is wise to start publicizing 64-bit Windows.
"Remember that Linux is 64 bits today," said Terry Shannon, a consultant in Ashland, Mass., who publishes the Shannon Knows Compaq newsletter. "The Windows folks are feeling the heat."
