I will admit that Gould appears to have an agenda. Eldridge, the co-author of the initial studies leading to PE is quieter on the implications and pretty much sticks to talking about clams and mussels. But it is incorrect to say that PE is just an innocent theory A theory has to make a claim, be testable, and generally provide predictability or consistant results. PE does all of this. It does not invalidate a theory because someone uses it as part of a larger argument.

In the 1890's, a few years after Darwin published, a man named Spencer took pieces of the theory of natural selection, added the phrase Survival of the Fittest and used it for his own purposes, including support for slavery. It was widely used in by the Nazi's to support the extermination of non-Arians. That usage did not invalidate Darwin's work.
