Sure, gnostics (note the small g) are people who are characterized by knowledge and cognition. These are people who tend to have a rational approach to knowledge, and believe that the true nature of the universe can be discovered. Gnostics (big G) were people who tried to apply some of the tenets of gnosticism to religion. Oddly enough, Gnostics believed that knowledge could be discovered through faith alone. When I talk of knowledge in this context I am referring to the nature of God.

Th. Huxley's was engaging in word play -- something posters to this thread would never do. Because his comment was not written I have no idea whether he meant the quip to be in the big G or the little g context; I think it works well either way.

There are many other examples of misapplication of words or phrases. For example, H.L. Mencken coined the phrase "common knowledge" to refer to the things everybody "knows", but is wrong.

Example: It is common knowledge that wearing a cooper bracelet relieves arthritis pain.

Examples of common knowledge on SI: Technical analysis is predictive of future stock prices;

or:

MMs (men from mars whence all men derive so I am told? Or is it the candy that melts in your mouth, not in your hands -- I am not sure) manipulate markets through evil analysts.

I can't remember whether it was Clemens or Mencken who said words to the effect that:

For every difficult problem there is always a simple answer. And it is always wrong.
