non- teleological I think I figured it out, Why do I insist that evolution of life on earth is non-directed? It doesn't come from Darwin or Gould. Their theories may say that direction isn't necessary for change but that don't say direction is not possible. A part of it comes from the idea that if man was designed, why was such a poor job performed. After all, we have bad backs and mental disease. The clincher from me was to look for the mechanism. If there were a great programmer in the sky tweaking things as they go along with a goal in mind, could it be done? The short answer is that uncertainty and chaos rule it out, if our universe were created (and I can't rule that out) it was done so with properties that defy prediction, even by the all-knowing. That is, of course, unless the universe were completely predictable, as if we were a simulation. TP
