fall will hit,<<

Well, it's almost March now, and the most significant news I've seen is Thursday 20 Feb 97 New York Times Business Section's announcment thatt Compaq is releasing a new Presario computer using a Cyrix chip!

Is this the sign that Intel is faltering that you had been looking for?

Also, I hear that the MMX chip doesn't run as fast when they conduct a benchmark on Photoshop agaist DEC's Alpha and the older PowerPC chip on a Mac leaves it in the dust on most of the tests. When you consider that this is an older Motorola PowerPC chip and that the latest PowerPC Risk chip is reputed to be clocked at over 533 mhz with 1 ghz expected by 1999, MMX doesn't seem to hold much promise. IMO

Also developments with software may dramatically increase speed on older Intel chips. I hear that beta versions of Corel's Office Suite in Java is blazing on OS2 Warp4.

I haven't seen any quantitative tests on this though, just rumor. My guess that the acceleration would be due to the dumping of Windows (memory and speed hog) in option for Java based code.

If Adobe changes their strategy and stops courting chip hardware in favor of software (Java), this could open markets for them not only for PC and Macs, but Unix environments as well. And those environments may not necessarily need MMX technology.

Now the March timeframe for intels unravelling is somewhat coincidental with Netscapes release of new browser/Java technology that may also contribute to the irrelevence of Intel's MMX.
