You're forgetting that by having someone like AMD around, it pushes you to become more competitive (or "paranoid", if you like). I remember about a year or so ago, when sub $1000 really started taking off, an Intel exec was quoted as saying that if sub-$1k ever reached more than 50% of the retail market, it would definitely impact Intel's profit margin. Well, it has BUT intel's profit margins are going UP not DOWN! Why? Because in the past year, Intel has been very agressive with their process technology, introducing faster & faster MHz, marketing, etc. In other words, Intel has been "pushed" by several factors, AMD, Asia, anti-trust, etc. and as a result,they are now better off responding to any future challenges.
