from NSOL's web site: Network Solutions Implements New Registry System
Herndon, Va., April 2, 1999 - Network Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: NSOL), the world leader in Web address registration, today announced the installation and testing of a new and separate registry backend system that will allow multiple globally diverse registrars to register domain names. Network Solutions pioneered domain name address registration and has built and maintains the world's leading registrar services.
"Network Solutions is dedicated to ensuring a successful evolution to a completely new global competitive registry system and we are moving at full-speed in close cooperation with the U.S. Government and the Internet community," said Donald N. Telage, Network Solutions' senior vice president of Internet Relations. "This complex system will be available ahead of schedule. We are eager to work with the Department of Commerce and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) during this important phase of the project."
In order to install the test Shared Registration System, it is anticipated that there will be intermittent disruptions to Network Solutions' registrar services from 10 p.m. EST, Friday, April 2, until mid-morning Saturday, April 3. The Shared Registration System will be modified during this period and registrants may experience difficulty attempting to reserve or change existing domain name registrant data through the www.networksolutions.com registrar site. There will also be minimal delays in processing email template registrations. Every registration e-mail template registration submitted during this period will be queued and processed once all systems are operational. Registrants and ISP or web hosting companies will not need to resubmit their email templates. During this period the Web-based registrations and our Whois look-up service will be available.
Network Solutions also plans to establish a new Shared Registry System Web site that will be a resource for new test phase registrars. The new registry site, when available, will be at www.nsiregistry.com, and will serve as an initial resource for new registrars in the top-level domain names .com, .net and .org. The new registry site will be distinct from Network Solutions recently consolidated registrar site at www.networksolutions.com. Network Solutions' registry site will contain documents and links pertaining to the Shared Registry System transition effort, including the Department of Commerce documents referred to as the "Green Paper," and "White Paper;" plus links to other groups participating in this worldwide Internet transition.
