Great article, Eric. It answers one of the questions we were asking: "That [consumer DSL] effort is being made through MCI WorldCom's UUNet, which in turn buys its DSL access from other local providers."

It's interesting that Microsoft is offering the service first in two cities served by erstwhile partners in the other net strategy. USWest serves Seattle. BellSouth serves Atlanta.

The story states, "But then the telcos felt Microsoft wanted too much control, and Microsoft fell out of the deal in mid-February."

And now they're competing with them for DSL dollars. (Although, of course, the telcos still own the copper, so they still make dozens of pennies no matter what.)
