Actually the telcos will not prosper by this.

That was one of the points made in the Last-Mile thread when we asked about this. Frank_C pointed out that if a competitive provider gets access to the telco wires for data, they could start offering voice as well. Of course, the telcos have no choice but to provide access to competitors since it's all tied up in the wealth of regulations.

The telcos have been slow, but at least they're rolling out the service. I have DSL access right now from USWest, which is more than anyone could say about DSL access from AOL. At least MSN looks like it's doing something concrete. That's far different from AOL whose broadband "strategy" seems to be classic vapor-service -- sign agreements and tell everyone how great things will be "real soon now" but don't worry about actually giving anyone the service.
