Scumbria,

Re: "Sad thing is the risk isn't necessary if you understand FET/device architecture and processing.

It is very sad that no one at AMD or Motorola understands transistors."

The copper doesn't speed up the Fets or transistors at all.

It reduces the Al wire resistance and therefore allows faster speed paths due to reduced wiring delay.

Clearly the Cu is a huge risk as it is a tough product to control and yield being in it's infancy in advanced semiconductor products.

The prudent thing to have done would be to dedicate Fab 30 to Al and 0.18 micron. We would be in production already at Fab 30 by now for the k-3's at 0.22 micron and the 0.18 micron transition could occur with some reasonable certitude at SDC and Fab 25 and Fab 30.

Now we will either get a home run and 1Ghz K7's by year end or HUGE LOSSES if yields zero out for the next year.

Oh well, Jerry always was a gambler and he sure has rolled a BIG one.

Regards,

Kash Johal.
