The following is advice from the book...HOW TO MAKE MONEY IN STOCKS by WIlliam O'Neil (editor and founder of Investors Business Daily):

Since you have to get an uptick from the previous trade before your short order is executed, orders should normally be entered either at the market or with a LIMIT of 1/4 point or so BELOW the last price.
A weak stock could trade downn a oint or more without having an uptick.
