The stock market reaction is based on a rumor generated by Mark Fitzgerald at Merrill Lynch. This rumor is based loosely on the long standing belief (among industry folks and bankers -- the latter the most lethal of the two) that these two companies should/could merge.

I assume NVLS has a policy of not commenting on rumors; LRCX does. Who knows if anything will come of it. I certainly would not buy either for the takeover speculation value alone.
