Paul -- The Nazi's swept through Yugoslavia by several routes combined with air bombing of Belgrade -- I think you will see in one of my earlier posts that I myself said that Hungary to Belgrade was the fastest ground troop route to take if NATO decided to go that route. I think the General is right about the fastest route -- but wrong with the rhetoric he uses about WWII and his assertion that SERBS are poor fighters. As many pointed out when I posted about the 3 or 4 possible routes into Serbia -- the Hugary to Blegrade route does nothing to stop the mess in Kosovo and in fact would probably push more Yugoslav troops into Kosovo. As for what would happen if we did enter and occupy Serbia -- I wouldn't get your hopes up -- because of the 600 year occupation by Turks -- Serbs have a deep seated fear of this and I think it will unify the nation to resistance. These are just some facts to remember: Croats and Muslims joined Hitler in WWII and took part in the slaughtering of some 3 million Serbs at that time. Serbs after early slaughter are pushed back into hills -- where they hold back Nazi's, Croats, and Muslims, ONLY BECAUSE GREECE and US supply food and weapons. To be more blunt -- Croats and Muslims joined The Third Reich Serbs were Allies with USA. FAST Forward: When Croats break away from Yugoslavia -- Germany is first country to recognize Croatia as Independent nation. The Serbs naturally at this point thought that the US would support Serbia when this war broke out. When you talk to a Serb today -- what you get is "They were with the Nazi's -- they slaughtered us -- now Germany is with them again -- We were with you -- we tried to hold Hitler back -- why are you not with us?" You see we got over it -- we buy German goods -- when we hear the word German today we don't think Nazi. We can go to see Saving Private Ryan and then the next day buy a Mercedes. Not so in Serbia. And the Serbs are dumbfounded that our memory isn't as good as thiers. The Serbs are among the most Pro-American people to have lived under the Eastern Block. Our policies and the NATO bombing is changing that -- and I don't think that is too the good -- I think ground troops will only make things worse not better. I apologise for calling Ogden an armchair General -- he has served our country and did not deserve that -- particularly from me. But I firmly believe that if any NATO projections showed that only 100 to 500 casualties would be suffered by a ground invasion of Serbia -- We would have done it. They have not -- the good General -is right about the fastest way in -- but wrong about the costs in lives -- and has failed as well to show us the path out once we are in. I did not mean to infer that the SERBS somehow stopped the NAZI"S in WWII -- only that as the Nazi's swept the region -- the Serbs were among the only people to resist Hitler. The only people along with the Greeks to Ally with us -- they have always viewed the Greeks and Americans as their friends -- they simply do not understand the actions we are taking today -- it makes no sense to an average Serb.
