Flash memory is inside the modem and is non-volatile. In other words when the chip is "flashed" with new software, it retains the information without the need for continuous battery power.

As for blowing earnings, I highly doubt that a week delay from their original internal plan is going to cause a miss. They will still get the huge benefit of tremendous volumes due to initial pipleline fill. The entire retail channel is dying to get their first shipments. Also, call any of the mail order houses and they will tell you that they already have large customer waiting lists for the first shipments. One large mail order house told me that their waiting list probably already exceeds the number of modems they will get in their first shipment. All of the comments I have read from USRX suggest that they do not see any significant impact from the x2 delay.
