8 hours to scan 2% does not sound right. Surface scans are very time consuming but not THAT long. I assume you are running scandisk from the C: prompt?

If it was me I would use the sledge hammer approach and format the drive (after salvaging what files I could), although if the disk is damaged I'm not sure if Windows will even install.

Someone here may have a screwdriver approach whereby you can repair some files or the registry.

Basically it sounds like it's pretty screwed up <g>. Out of curiosity, what program were you trying to install?
