Mr Steinmetz is a candidate for membership in the Digital Me Privacy Club. His most serious loss of digital identity occurred when his account on AOL was used to disseminate the Melissa virus. Put yourself in his shoes and you will understand what it is like to be a victim of the theft of your digital identity.

Mr. Steinmetz lost his digital identity to a hacker. What if Mr. Steinmetz had lost his bank accounts, his business, his intellectual property to a thief or his child's well being to a criminal?

Because the hacker was portrayed as threatening the security of the internet he is charged with crimes that will bring him stiff criminal punishment. But if Mr. Steinmetz's intellectual property was stolen and he were left to pursue civil action to recover its value, there isn't a Court in this country that would give him any relief. If his credit card was stolen and goods were purchased with it, he would have to prove to his credit card company that he didn't do it.

All because someone stole his AOL user id and password.
