>Often increases in inventories and AR are underlying causes<
Bob these are the early warning signs and are the principale measures mgmt(CFO) use to monitor opperations. Typically in a manufacturing business you can produce inventory and book profit, which goes back to Auric's comments about income to cash flow. While one should understand the nature of a business (seasonality and product cycles), a close watch on DSO and Inventory turns can be the early warning signs of a great short opportunity. As a example check out SFSK and SSB's downgrade last October by Melissa Wilmouth (summary of the carrnage fnews.yahoo.com that is just now running it's course). I'm following them as I love to buy on the cheap!
