The picture becomes much more depressing when each stock Friday's close is compared to the highest closing price it achieved in 1997 irrespective of when it occurred during that year. Only 1 stock, AMAT is "above water". All 40 of the other stocks have not been able to achieve a gain since their closing high point in 1997. 36 of the stocks are down more than 30 percent, and 27 of the stocks are down over 50 percent. If you want to see real "pain", look at those stocks at the bottom of the table. The group sum is down 50 percent. Note how "well" the 4 SOX_X component stocks have done.
