John: Your points are good ones, and clearly point to one basic American reality. Our love of the ICE(Internal Combustion Engine) linked to this dream of "freedom" implicit in the interstate transportation system. But as others have pointed out the cost of petrol to the average U.S. citizen is artificially low. I say artificial when compared to the average cost incurred by the rest of the planet. I guess you could say that's probably because we're the "top dog" rich boys of the neighborhood. And the rich boys always insure their addictions are maintained. Heh!! Be that as it may, if you consider all the OTHER uses our modern, hi-tech civilization finds, indeed REQUIRES TO EXIST, for petroleum I submit one very basic idea to this thread. Petroleum is too precious a commodity to stick in a tank and then BURN! Bottom line? Just as our day & age now finds the Romans of ancient times uses of lead insane, so, too will the future one day see us as being crazy for the manner in which we use this substance. Regards! John~
