I don't know what it says about AOL as an investment, but I just spent at least a half-hour haggling to get myself disconnected from AOL as a customer. I had been keeping a $4.95 a month membership purely as a backup Internet access in case my regular supplier crashed.

When I thought I was all through, I was switched to another representative and being given a spiel that was designed so that if you were not very careful what you did or did not say, you not only would be reconnected with AOL but also have your long distance service switched to them. It went something like, "With your permission I am going to give you a totally free month of America Online and also you will only pay nine cents a minute for your long distance calls, OK?"

Even now I am not sure that I got loose from them. This kind of pressure and salesmanship is what I associate with fly-by-night roof fixers and such.
