Flash memory is inside the modem and is non-volatile. In other words when the chip is "flashed" with new software, it retains the information without the need for continuous battery power.

True for the courier line. But the Sportster uses a 1 time burned ROM as it's program for the modem chip. The ROM (a sub-$1 item) must be removed and replaced to upgrade. The Winmodom Sportster uses a Windows memory resident segment that contains the modem chip instructions. This is not resident on the modem. I bought both modems in December and both are upgradable (free) to 56k. But mine are not FLASH.
