I appreciate your inquiry, though I can't tell if you appreciate my comments or just suspect them <g>. It doesn't matter, and I don't believe your suicide will be required. ;)
You are correct that I am knowledgeable. I have a technical education and I have been close to the businesses that JPSI is in. I have technical and business experience in the areas of applied technology and capital equipment manufacturing.
JPSI could survive without DARPA, because they don't get any funding from them now, and they are 90% or more of current JMAR revenue. Almost by definition, JRI and JSI would not survive without government contracts. I think you are right about the "grant" mentality at JRI, but I believe Martinez and Foster have been changing that, or at least fighting it, for years. If his experience at PI and ThermoElectron means anything, Martinez should know how to spin basic research work into real products.
I believe the weakness may lie in the marketing function, and I don't mean marketing communications. I mean the ability to understand where a new product would succeed. In other words, JMAR might know how to turn research into products, but they don't know what products to build. This is generally one of the toughest business areas to get right. |
