Len, The investors on this thread don't seem to understand the importance of your point. The vast majority of Sportsters are not upgradeable to 56K without a chip replacement. USRX just lost a good portion of its competitive edge. Most of the people on this thread seem to think that if USRX is first to market by 30 days it is going to make a big difference...it won't. The majority of USRX's installed base of modem's won't be able to take advantage the upgrade and this installed base is going to be upset when they learn the truth. The only smooth transition will be for Winmodem owners, however, no one has responded yet to the questions in my previous post about Winmodem performance issues under 56K.

From the USR web page:

Q: What is involved with upgrading equipment to support x2
functionality?

A: x2 will be offered in all Network Systems products
(Total Control, MP, NETServer and Courier) as a
software download. This means the customer merely has
to upgrade their current equipment's software, rather than
having to actually replace hardware. The process will be
simple and inexpensive. The Sportster Winmodem
products are software upgradable. Sportster 33.6 desktop
products purchased after August 15, 1996 can be
upgraded to x2 by swapping the product's ROM
integrated circuit. Details on upgrades for the specific
U.S. Robotics products will be available prior to the
availability of x2 Technology.

Regards,
David
