Compaq set to bolster SAN initiative
Compaq Computer Corp. next week will unveil several new products as it kicks off the second phase of its storage area networking initiative.
On the software side, the Houston-based company will introduce the StorageWorks Data Replication Manager, which replicates data at 100MB per second to remote sites located up to 10 kilometers from the central data center.
On the hardware side, Compaq will introduce the StorageWorks RAID Array 8000, an eight-drive array, and the Enterprise Storage Array 12000, a 12-drive array. It will also introduce an eight- and 16-port Fibre Channel switch, both of which it is licensing from Brocade Communications Systems Inc.
All products will be available in mid-April.
Also this month, Compaq storage products will start supporting Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop for Novell Netware, SCO UnixWare and Windows NT on Alpha. It will also support Switched Fibre interconnects on Tru64 Unix, Open VMS and Windows NT on Intel platforms.
Pricing will vary according to configuration. A Data Replication Manager and switch combination starts at $120,000. A packaged 400 GB RAID array and eight-port switch starts at $105,000.
