Only a savage would drink "hard stuff" with dinner because it kills the taste buds, unlike wine, which enhances some tastes, and beer, which enhances many of the ones wine doesn't enhance. I don't think either go well with salads (lemon instead of vinegar helps) or simple vegetable dishes, that's just my opinion, although both may be consumed with complex, robust dishes like roasted vegetables or potatoes au gratin (the real kind). [I refuse to edit the previous sentence.]
