To Grant: Since I have nominated Uniphase, I will comment on "The Intel of the Telecosm". Yes, think Gilder is correct for the reasons he outlines in abundance. Not only that but Uniphase provides the vast majority of active fiber optics "widgets" (technical term :-) ) - the pumps, lasers et al but its soon to be merger partner JDS Fitel is the major supplier of passive "widgets". Perhaps a technology wiz here will amplify. :-) Also think this is a nominee for royalty - not a gorilla - at least not yet and probably never.

And by the way, not to delve too deeply into the gorilla-ness of Intel, but I agree that Intel is not now a gorilla - even if it once was - no way does it have any lock on a technology sufficient for that status - and market share shrinking as movement is away from Wintel.

But don't wish to drag the thread back into the Microsoft "discussion" through the Wintel back door. :-)

Chaz too
