ahem. WIN 95 IS NOT MULTITASKING. It pretends to be. It is not really.

FIRST YOU SHUT DOWN X. THEN YOU SHUT DOWN LINUX BY USING THE HALT COMMAND. IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO EXIT ALL PROGRAMS FIRST.

I take it you have three physical drives and Linux is on the 5th partion of your third physical drive, then it would be /dev/hdc5.

if you go "cat /etc/fstab" you will see what partions are on your disk. Please publish that for us. Of course you must boot from a boot disk and mount the main partition first I would think.

If your version of RH has a shutdown command in X I would think it refers to X only. does your screen go black and you get a series of messages saying "exiting runlevels, shutting down system" or words to that effect? If not then you are merely exiting X not Linux.
