scumbria - Re: "I think that a 600 MHz K7 with FPU performance that blows PIII away will be a marketplace disaster. Why would an OEM be interested in such a silly product?"

Look at it this way.

No OEM that you have shown has uttered one sentence in support of the Kmart 7 and NO OEM's have announced any future products based on the Kmart 7.

The only conclusion I can reach is that your statement "a 600 MHz K7 with FPU performance that blows PIII away " is inoperative.

And don't forget - AMD has "lowered their sights" to the enthusiast DESKTOP for the Kmart 7 - away from the Workstation and Server "segment".

pcvelocity.com

"AMD: I'm not too sure where you saw this info. We plan for the K7 to launch in high-end enthusiast/business PCs. The specific configurations at launch are still not public. The first K7 point-product(s) that launch are planned to be aimed at the high-end of the desktop PC space. "

You can already write-off the margins on this 184 sq. mm. CPU as it is going to cost AMD a bundle to make with their low yields, and selling in to the DESKTOP market.

AMD will be competing not only with Intel's Pentium III, but with their own Kmart 63's !!!!!!

The lucrative Server and Workstation segments are now just a dream to AMD - as are profits.
